AFTER JAMB WHAT NEXT?

This question begins to arouse in the minds of Jambites few days after UTME conclusion. As the UTME 2017 Examination comes to a close, there is need to have a plan for the next step to take. If it were to be few years back I would be talking about Post-Utme examinations but owing to the new policy by JAMB it is no longer like that. As such we focus more on strategic actions to take while waiting for schools to call for screening.

Now that you have taken your UTME exam and you have seen your score, what comes next is preparing yourself for the

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR ENTRY SCORE

Since the implementation of the new procedures for admission into tertiary institution was amended by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board, it has seized to be a tradition for students to kick off another phase of studying for PostUTME.
While some see it as a welcome development others see it as an unjust or irrational way of checkmating proper and eligible entry into higher institution. Reasons not far-fetched owing to the fact that the criteria for admission is now the SSCE results combined with JAMB results.

That said, here are the important things you need to note as UTME Examinations are over;
1.       Criteria for admission is Jamb Score and SSCE Computation score

WHAT NEXT AFTER UTME?

After UTME (JAMB) what next?

This question I will say is not on the lips of jambites but it is in their mind. As the UTME 2016 Examination rounds off there is need to have a plan for the next step to wen it eventually comes to an end.

Usually students think Post-Utme is the next thing after jamb disregarding the fact that it is not really wats next even though actually it is.

Factors to take into cognizance before selecting Courses/ institutions

Your Ability: yes it is quite obvious that everyone wants the best; as such students tend to go for the most popular course neglecting their abilities just because everyone is going for it. I’m not of the opinion that you shouldn’t go for your dream course but if your ability is not in line with it the I’m sorry that not your dream course it’s your (COURSE OF CHOICE).

The School: in this this column I will stress two things; CATCHMENT AREA & TYPE OF INSTITUTION,

Firstly, students are not aware of that phrase Catchment area. This is one of the things considered by institutions when giving admission, its entails your state origin as filled in your form take example University of Nigeria Nsukka, they have the catchment areas as follows; Abia, Eboyi, Edo Kogi Imo, and the rest as such even if you do not get to the merit cutoff mark for your course, you could be admitted based on catchments area on the merit list. Also we have what is known as ELDS (Educational Less Developed States) examples of this states are Kogi, Eboyi … by virtue they are catchment areas for most if not all universities in Nigeria.

Secondly, the type of institution also matters, I will advise advice students not to go for the most popular universities but if you must, then select those ones that have your state listed as catchment areas.

Your Utme Score: this one comes after you might have taken the exam and have seen your score, the fact that you made 200+ does not guarantee your Admission, there are certain scores you have to acquire to be admitted e.g for Medicine you should have 270+ for Unilag and other Federal Varsities this is also depending on the number of students that applied for that particular course JAMB have made those statistics available in previous years , it will be very good to get one to know the number of students you are competing with as such estimate the minimum score you should have comparing with the previous year’s
