ADMISSIONS 2016 [CHECKMATE THE PREVIOUS ERRORS] PART II

Factors to take into cognizance before selecting Courses/ institutions

Your Ability: yes it is quite obvious that everyone wants the best; as such students tend to go for the most popular course neglecting their abilities just because everyone is going for it. I’m not of the opinion that you shouldn’t go for your dream course but if your ability is not in line with it the I’m sorry that not your dream course it’s your (COURSE OF CHOICE).

The School: in this this column I will stress two things; CATCHMENT AREA & TYPE OF INSTITUTION,

Firstly, students are not aware of that phrase Catchment area. This is one of the things considered by institutions when giving admission, its entails your state origin as filled in your form take example University of Nigeria Nsukka, they have the catchment areas as follows; Abia, Eboyi, Edo Kogi Imo, and the rest as such even if you do not get to the merit cutoff mark for your course, you could be admitted based on catchments area on the merit list. Also we have what is known as ELDS (Educational Less Developed States) examples of this states are Kogi, Eboyi … by virtue they are catchment areas for most if not all universities in Nigeria.

Secondly, the type of institution also matters, I will advise advice students not to go for the most popular universities but if you must, then select those ones that have your state listed as catchment areas.

Your Utme Score: this one comes after you might have taken the exam and have seen your score, the fact that you made 200+ does not guarantee your Admission, there are certain scores you have to acquire to be admitted e.g for Medicine you should have 270+ for Unilag and other Federal Varsities this is also depending on the number of students that applied for that particular course JAMB have made those statistics available in previous years , it will be very good to get one to know the number of students you are competing with as such estimate the minimum score you should have comparing with the previous year’s

These are the few we will take for this part, stay posed for PART III and to view PART I click HERE

In the next part we will switch gear away from courses /institutions. Stay posted
